FAQs

Where does my money go?

Calvert Foundation pools your investment together with thousands of other investors in order to make loans to our portfolio that includes nonprofits, microfinance institutions, and social enterprises.

Each of Calvert Foundation’s portfolio partners must pass our rigorous credit quality and social performance standards. Since 1995 our portfolio partners have maintained a repayment rate near 99%, and we have maintained a 100% repayment rate to all our investors due to our net assets and other security enhancements that serve to protect investors from portfolio losses.

Investments on invest.calvertfoundation.org are facilitated through a self-directed custodial account opened via Application Program Interface (API) when you make your first investment. Goldstar Trust Company (Goldstar), a trust only branch of Happy State Bank (FDIC insured), provides this custodial account service through its CrowdPay custodial accounts. When you purchase a note, you are instructing Goldstar to fund your CrowdPay account from a linked bank account as well as directing Goldstar to purchase a Community Investment Note for your benefit.

Is there a different prospectus for each sector or initiative?

No. Regardless of which sector or initiative page you invest on, you are investing in the same Calvert Foundation Community Investment Note. We enable investors to invest on these different pages in order to understand investor interest in our work. Please read the prospectus before investing.

How do I receive payments for interest earnings?

When your Community Investment Note pays interest or matures, the payment will be directed to and available in your CrowdPay account. From there, you may choose to reinvest the payment into a new Note or withdraw the payment back to your linked bank account. Actions you can take with respect to your CrowdPay account are available by clicking the "Funding Sources" button within the My Account section. Please make sure to read GoldStar Trust’s Privacy Policy, Terms and Conditions of CrowdPay accounts, and Consumer Investor Awareness Notice.

Can I buy a Note with a credit card or PayPal account?

No, you must use your checking or savings account. Your CrowdPay account is funded through automated clearinghouse (ACH) transactions linked to your checking or savings account.

Why do you need my Social Security Number?

When you purchase a Note on invest.calvertfoundation.org, you are opening a CrowdPay custodial account with Goldstar Trust Company (Goldstar). As such, the USA Patriot Act requires Goldstar to obtain, verify, and record information about each person who opens an account, as well as to provide you with tax documents related to your investment(s). When you purchase a Note for the first time, invest.calvertfoundation.org will securely provide your information to Goldstar such that they may verify your name, social security number, date of birth, and mailing address.

How is my personal information secured?

invest.calvertfoundation.org stores your name, address, email, date of birth, the last four digits of your social security number, and the last four digits of your bank routing number and account number. The rest of your personal information is maintained by GoldStar Trust Company, a deposit only branch of Happy State Bank (HSB), that serves as our payment processing partner.

HSB utilizes a comprehensive security strategy to protect the account information and transactions conducted via the Internet. HSB uses the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption technology and supports 128-bit encryption. HSB uses security measures that comply with Federal Banking guidelines and is examined yearly by federal regulators and audited by external firms annually. Those measures include computer safeguards, secured files and buildings, restricting access to your personal and account information to those employees who need to know that information, and training employees in information security and privacy procedures.

I’m a resident of a state that can’t invest. Why can’t I invest?

Due to Blue Sky regulations, the current offering of our Note cannot be sold in the states of Arkansas, South Carolina, or Washington. We are working with regulators in those states to be able to offer the Note to residents living in these states. Email us at support@calvertfoundation.org if you would like to be notified of any updates in your state.

What are the minimum and maximum investment amounts?

The minimum amount for each investment is $20. At this time, the maximum amount per investment is $10,000. If you wish to invest more than $10,000, you may invest directly with Calvert Foundation or via your brokerage account. Visit www.calvertfoundation.org/invest to learn about these options

Can I select different rate and term combinations on the investments?

Rate and term combinations are set by Calvert Foundation, and cannot be changed by the investor.

How do I find my bank routing number and bank account number?

Your bank routing and account numbers can be found at the bottom of a check from your checking or savings account. The first number at the bottom of the check is your routing number, the second is your account number.

How do I change my personal or bank account info?

Log in and select 'My Account' from the Menu on the right-hand side. To update your personal information, select the 'Personal Information' button at the top of the page, update your information, then click 'Update Account' at the bottom of the page. To update or change your bank account info, please contact us at support@calvertfoundation.org.

What updates do I receive as an investor?

When you register as a user with invest.calvertfoundation.org you will receive an email confirmation to activate your account. After first submitting your personal information, you will receive an email confirming the creation of your CrowdPay account. After completing the purchase of an investment, you will receive an email confirming the purchase. Once the purchase is completed (1-5 business days) you will receive a final purchase confirmation email. The month prior to the anniversary and maturity of your Note, you will receive an email with information about expected interest payments and your options at maturity. You will also be notified the January following an interest payment when your 1099-INT is available. You will receive an email anytime you make a change to your account.

On a more fun note, you will receive Calvert Foundation’s annual report and annual social impact report as well as periodic updates about the initiatives you have supported so that you can see the real impact of your investment(s) in communities in the United States and around the world

How often do I receive interest?

Calvert Foundation pays interest on an annual basis. You will receive interest payments from an investment each year on the settlement date of your investment. For example, if you invest for three years, and your Note settled on July 1st, 2014, you will receive interest on July 1st, 2015, July 1st, 2016 (anniversary dates) and July 1st, 2017 (maturity date). In addition to the interest payment on July 1st, 2017, you will also receive the principal of your investment as it will have matured. Starting 30 days before its maturity date, you will have the option to choose to automatically reinvest your note when it matures.

What happens at my Note’s anniversary and maturity?

On the anniversary date, interest earned on your investment over the past year will be directed to your CrowdPay account. On the maturity date, both interest earned during the past year as well as the principal value of the note will be directed to your CrowdPay account.

What other ways can I invest?

Investors can purchase Community Investment Notes directly from Calvert Foundation, or through a brokerage account. Visit www.calvertfoundation.org/invest to learn more about these options.

Can I invest in a Note through my retirement account?

You can purchase the Note in self-directed Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) at brokerage firms. The following retirement accounts have the option of being self-directed: a traditional IRA, Roth IRA, Rollover IRA, Educational IRA, and SEP IRA. The minimum investment for a brokerage account is $1,000. Please contact us at 855.678.6004 or support@calvertfoundation.org for more information.
